Morganton man killed in Labor Day accident

Luther “Luke” Stewart was killed on Labor Day when he lost control of the tractor he was driving and rolled down an embankment, Fannin County Coroner Becky Callihan said last week.

Stewart, 77, of Builders Hill in Morganton, was driving his tractor down My Mountain Road pulling a trailer. The road was wet at the time.

Callihan said the call reporting the accident came into the Fannin County 911 Center shortly after 10 a.m. Monday, September 6. She said she pronounced Stewart dead at the scene at 10:58 a.m.

Callihan said Stewart’s wife told her he had gone to get wood for a neighbor.

Stewart’s obituary said he passed away unexpectedly, “doing what he loved to do – serving others. He was truly gifted with a servant’s heart.”

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Sue. His full obituary appears on page B6.
