McCaysville officer nabs federal fugitive

A fugitive being hunted by U.S. Marshals is in custody as the result of a traffic stop by a McCaysville police officer.

Hugh Britt Hurley, 48, of Farner Road in Polk County, was being sought  by federal authorities on a failure to appear warrant from a drug trafficking charge.

McCaysville Police Chief Mike Earley said Officer Jordan Wright spotted the motorcycle Hurley was believed to be riding Sunday afternoon on Central Avenue.

When Hurley turned on to Blue Ridge Drive, he gave an improper turn signal. The traffic stop occurred just before 1 p.m., Earley said.

Hurley is being held in the Fannin County jail on the federal charge, along with McCaysville charges of driving on a suspended license, improper turn signal and expired registration.
