Library committee gets look at proposed building

The building committee for the Fannin County Public Library met Friday, October 7, to discuss plans for the new building.

The main topic of discussion was parking spaces. Currently, there is enough land availability for 19 parking spaces, but the Fannin County ordinance has rules set in place that would require the building to have 32 parking spaces.

The architect currently working on the project Matthew Cash said, “One of the things that we were worried about was, since we didn’t have a topography before the survey, was...how many parking spaces we’ll be able to get on the site.”

Cash said that the requirement for parking spaces is one parking space per every 400 square feet, plus two additional spaces for library employees. The requirements totaled together create 32 parking spaces.

Cash said that they may be able to get more parking spaces, but he doesn’t “really see the opportunity to get the full 32 on this piece of land.” He then said the question he would have for the county would be in regards to using the “other parking lot that’s there,” which is adjacent to the building site.

He also mentioned removing the dumpster area to provide employee parking, allowing for more room. He said, “We can adjust the building as much as possible.”

“The big take away is that we can get 19 spaces for sure, but we are going to need to take advantage of the other lot,” said Cash.

Heath Lee said, “All of that is to be arranged between the county and the school system.”

The Quorum for the meeting was unable to attend, so there were no items voted on during the meeting.

The next regular library board meeting will be October 20, at 10 a.m.

The building committee meeting will be 20 minutes prior.
