Fannin County High School graduate Eric Gavelek Munchel, known as the “zip tie guy” in connection with the invasion of the U.S. Capitol January 6, will remain in jail until his trial.
Munchel, 30, of Nashville, Tennessee, was arrested by the FBI January 12 on federal charges of knowingly entering or remaining in any restricted building or grounds without lawful authority and violent entry and disorderly conduct on capitol grounds.
A federal magistrate judge for the Middle District of Tennessee in Nashville had agreed to Munchel’s release in a January 22 order.
However, Beryl A. Howell, chief judge for the United States District Court for the District of Columbia, stepped in and stayed that order.
Then, at a detention hearing Wednesday, February 17, Royce Lamberth, United States District Judge for the District of Columbia, reversed the release order.
According to court records, Lamberth found that no combinations of release conditions would “reasonably assure the safety of any person and the community.”
Munchel was remanded into custody until trial.
No trial date was set.
