The intersection of Georgia Highway 515 and State Route 325 in Union County will officially be dedicated to Sydnie Grace Jones in a ceremony to be held Tuesday, September 14, at 1:30 p.m. at Meeks Park in Blairsville.
Georgia Speaker of the House and District 7 Representative David Ralston announced the ceremony last week.
In that announcement, Ralston described Jones as, “A promising and outstanding young citizen.”
Jones lost her life as a result of a vehicle collision at the intersection on January 12, 2021. She passed away on January 22, 2021.
Jones, of Morganton, was only 19 years old at the time. A graduate of Fannin County High School, she played soccer and volleyball. She attended The Ridge Community Church and was active in the First Baptist Church of Blue Ridge youth group.
The effort to name the intersection in her honor was led by Ralston and Representative Stan Gunter of Blairsville in the state House and Senator Steve Gooch. The House Resolution naming the intersection was signed by Governor Brian Kemp on April 29.
The resolution read, in part, “The State of Georgia lost one of its most promising young citizens with (Jones’) tragic passing.
“A compassionate and generous young woman, Ms. Jones will long be remembered for her love of family and friendship, and this loyal daughter, granddaughter, and a friend will be missed by all who had the great fortune of knowing her.”
As the result of the crash that took Jones’ life, the Georgia Department of Transportation announced in June that major safety improvements will be made at the intersection.
Sydnie’s parents are Anthony Jones and Melinda Joy Rogers Jones.
