Helping hands, money needed to feed children

Volunteers and donations are needed to help feed Fannin County children during the summer.

Faith Presbyterian Church, Fannin County Family Connection, Snack in a Backpack, Temple Baptist Church and St. Luke’s Episcopal Church have teamed up to offer a free Summer Meal Program for Fannin County children under age 18.

However, help is still needed in order to provide 800 meals a week for nine weeks.

“We need donations and volunteers to make this happen,” said spokesperson Jeanie May.

Volunteers are needed to help pack and deliver meals. Packers are needed on Mondays, and deliverers are needed Mondays and Thursdays.

Deliveries will be to approximately 10 sites.

The Summer Meal Program will run from June 1 to July 30, Mondays and Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m., rain or shine.

This year, a new meal site has been added at East Fannin Elementary School.

Other locations will be at Brooks Summit Apartments, Blue Ridge Housing Authority, Highway 5 Trailer Parks, North Court Apartments, Jones Street Apartments & Park, Brookstone Apartments and Mineral Springs Apartments.

“In these trying times, due to the coronavirus pandemic, providing food insecure children in Fannin County with a nutritious meal over summer school break is more important than ever,” May said.
