SPECIAL TO THE NEWS OBSERVER

----

East Fannin Elementary School student Violet Lake and Caroline Monteith, of Epworth, joined the Glitter Girls at the National Gingerbread Competition in Asheveille, North Carolina, November 22, where they won second place in the Child Division (ages 5 to 7).

The Glitter Girls, led by Kathy Thompson, also included Maggie Schneider and Thompson’s granddaughters, Sarah Miller and Bryna, and have been creating for three years.

This year’s entry was made of gingerbread, fondant, frosting, candies and ice cream cones and depicted self-portraits of the girls as princesses helping Santa find forever homes for dogs and cats.

Entries were judged by 11 national and internationally known chefs, including Carla Hall of “Top Chef” and “The Crew.” The competition is held annually and is featured on Good Morning America and the Food Channel.

The Glitter Girls’ entry and Thompson’s Teen Division team’s entry are both on display at Grove Park Inn in Asheville over the holidays.
