Only one individual showed up to get their COVID-19 vaccine and $50 gift card Saturday, September 18, for the Fannin County Health Department’s COVID-19 Vaccination Clinic.
The health department received an anonymous donation of gift cards from a donor in an attempt to get more county residents vaccinated, North Georgia Health District Communications Specialist Jennifer King said.
Although the incentive was advertised for Fannin County residents only as well as for those receiving their first dose, the donors later agreed to have the health department offer the cards to anyone who would receive either the first or second dose, regardless of residency.
This choice was made amidst the clinic as a result of the lack of participation.
“Of course, we are disappointed more people did not get vaccinated against COVID-19 today but are very grateful for the community support for this clinic from the local private donors of funds for the gift cards, the Blue Ridge Kiwanis Club, the local EMA, EMS and law enforcement personnel, and Papa John’s Pizza in Blue Ridge,” King said.
“We urge people to come to the health department on Ouida Street weekdays, without an appointment, to get a free COVID-19 vaccination to protect themselves, their loved ones, and their community.”
Expressing disappointment in the turnout, Nursing Supervisor Angela Blevins said that the vaccine is beneficial to the population.
“There are some breakthrough cases of those in the hospital that have been vaccinated, but they usually have other conditions as well,” Blevins said.
King went further to note that 30% of new cases in Georgia are among children.
“We are now seeing deaths among children,” she said.
Anyone interested in receiving either the Moderna or Pfizer vaccine may visit the health department located at 95 Ouida Street in Blue Ridge or can call the department at 706-632-3024 for more information.
