Five Fannin County High School seniors were surprised Friday morning, December 9, when they were presented acceptance letters to attend the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta.
McKenzie Chastain, Kaitlyn Nelson, Sam Jabaley, James Kyle and Bryce Ware were presented their letters by Mary Tipton Woolley, senior associate director of Undergraduate Admissions at Georgia Tech.
Woolley commended the students for being among only 40% of some 6,500 applicants accepted for the Fall 2023 semester. “You’ve done all the work to get to this place,” she said.
Woolley also applauded the strong support network the students receive through the school system and the community.
Katie Mattlie of Georgia Tech talked of how she had read over the five students’ applications that reflected 1,000 hours of combined community service. Between the five students, they have served in 20 or more leadership positions within the school.
Mattlie picked out words teachers and counselors had used to described them: ambitious, persistent, well rounded, mature, innovative and respectful were just a few.
