New service starts Jan. 8
McCaysville customers may notice a bit of trash buildup as the city transitions to a new garbage provider.
Jackie Rhodes, the previous contract holder for the last 40 years, notified McCaysville City Council of his retirement in mid-December, leaving the city in need of a new provider by Saturday, January 1, 2022.
Council members selected Grants Garbage at a special called meeting Tuesday, December 28. The new provider’s trash pick up day will be Saturdays and city customer’s garbage fee will increase from $14.50 to $21.75 for 2022.
Due to the first Saturday of the year falling on the first day of the year, the council reached out to Rhodes about possible solutions to help with the transition.
Rhodes agreed to pick up the first week of January, which would allow for Grants Garbage to start Saturday, January 8, giving residents a chance to adjust to the schedule change. However, a piece from Rhodes’ truck broke, and he will became unable to help during the first week of 2022.
City customers will need to put their garbage cans out the evening of Friday, January 7, for their first garbage pick up of the year, Saturday, January 8.
City council received three bid proposals from Grants Garbage, J and M Trash-B-Gone and Moore and Son’s Sanitation and prior to the special called meeting.
Representatives from both Grants Garbage and J and M Trash-B-Gone attended the meeting and answered the council’s questions about their bids regarding insurance coverage, proposed pick up days, fees and possible commercial pick up options.
Both garbage providers informed the council that no provider would be able to match the previous $14.50 rate due to dump fees and increased gas prices. Grants Garbage proposed $21.75 a month for customers and a Saturday pick up for all residents using three drivers starting before daybreak.
J and M Trash-B-Gone proposed $22 a month and either Tuesday or Friday pick up with one driver.
Councilwoman Gilita Carter made the motion to accept Grants Garbage’s proposal, Councilman Jason Woody seconded and Councilman Larry Collis and Councilwoman Susan Kiker agreed. Councilwoman Sue Beaver was absent from the meeting.
The garbage pick up fee will still appear on customers’ water bills, and customers will continue using their current garbage cans.
The contract is set for a yearly renewal, but does have a 90-day out for both the city and Grants Garbage.
There will be no commercial dumpster pick up, and a commercial garbage can pick up fee will need to be negotiated with Grants Garbage, as it has been in the past.
