A 64-year-old Morganton woman was killed Sunday in what Fannin County Coroner Becky Callihan called a “freak accident.”
Gale Owens of Grady Hunt Road died from injuries she received when she was run over by her own car in the Ingles Shopping Center parking lot in Blue Ridge.
Callihan said Owens had parked in the bottom portion of the parking lot and gone into the store to buy groceries.
Authorities believe when she returned, she started her car before putting the groceries inside. For some reason, the car was in reverse and Owens could not get back inside quickly enough.
Owens was alone at the time and no one else was involved, Callihan said.
The call was received by the Fannin County 911 Center at 1:09 p.m.
