Feed Fannin readying for harvest

The volunteers of Feed Fannin have been hard at work preparing the garden for harvest.

Come late summer and early fall, corn, tomatoes, sweet potatoes, green beans and more will be ready to fill the bellies of locals in need.

Partnered with the Food Pantry at Fannin County Family Connection, Feed Fannin delivers thousands of pounds of fresh produce annually for those less fortunate.

On the Ada Street farm, they have added six galvanized raised beds, and with thanks to Tim and Lisa Doherty of Doc’s Healing Hives and Honey Foundation, two bee boxes and hives have been added on the farm.

Additionally, their mowers have been serviced.

Aside from working the garden, volunteers have been busy awarding scholarships to high school seniors, filling the pantry of a recent Habitat for Humanity family and much more.

After being awarded $30,000 through Impact100 of Fannin County, Feed Fannin was able to purchase a Jeep Grand Cherokee this past April. The vehicle will be used to haul food and garden supplies.

Previously, volunteers used their personal vehicles.

“What a busy spring we’ve had,” exclaimed Kathy Beck, Farm and Facilities manager, in the most recent newsletter. “We are praying for a bountiful growing season and harvest.”

Volunteers are in the garden Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from around 9 a.m. to noon. The garden is located at 762 Ada Street in Blue Ridge.

The folks of Feed Fannin welcome any participation or interest in the group. Email Mary Kay Britzius, volunteer coordinator, at feedfannin@feedfannin.org to learn how to get involved.

“Come learn and give us a hand working in the garden as we grow produce for distribution at the Family Connection Food Pantry,” Beck added.

Aside from gardening, they are actively planning for local events such as the Old Timer’s Fourth of July Parade in Blue Ridge and Fall Arts in the Park Festival. Volunteers use these events as a way to promote their works and raise funds.
