Fannin County third graders visited the Fannin County School Systems Ag Facility Thursday and Friday, September 9 and 10, for the Georgia Ag Experience.
Students toured the Georgia Ag Experience trailer, engaged with Fannin County High School FFA members and their livestock, and learned about dairy farming from Nicole Duvall, of Georgia’s Mobile Dairy Classroom, and Jazzy, the Jersey cow.
West Fannin Elementary School visited Thursday morning, from 8:30 a.m. until 11:50 a.m., Blue Ridge Elementary School visited that afternoon from
12:20 p.m. until 2:30 p.m. and East Fannin Elementary School visited Friday morning from 8:30 a.m. until 11:50 a.m.
During a question and answer session, curious students from Ms. Fowler’s and Ms. Payne’s classrooms at West Fannin Elementary School asked Duvall questions like why Jazzy was so bony and had so many veins? Duvall explained how, as a dairy cow, Jazzy used most of her nutrition to produce milk and also needed a lot of veins to supply it.
While at the Georgia Ag Experience trailer, students played agriculture career bingo while learning about the many different jobs from forestry to dairy producer to greenhouse manager.
Students also learned about feed, machinery, and ATF safety at different stations throughout the facility. Fannin County Farm Bureau members and Fannin County Young Farmer Association members assisted at these stations.
The two-day event was sponsored by Georgia Farm Bureau Ag Experience, Fannin County Young Farmers Association, Fannin County Farm Bureau, Borden Dairy, Mercier Orchards, Mason Tractor Company, Georgia Mobile Dairy Classroom, Tri-State Electric, and Ms. Margery Dallas.
