The report of a small child left alone in a car led Polk County Sheriff’s deputies to an arrest and the seizure of a large amount of illegal drugs.
Deputies Logan Brooks and Austin Sweeney responded to a business in Delano December 14 for the report of a small child having been left alone in a vehicle.
When they arrived, the deputies made contact with Larry Dwain Shaw, 52, of Etowah, Tennessee, and also checked on the child who was still in the vehicle. Talking with the child, the deputies noticed a very strong smell of marijuana, a statement from the sheriff’s office said last week.
Deputies then searched the truck and located two small coolers that contained 153 individual baggies of suspected marijuana that weighed five pounds, five baggies of suspected methamphetamine weighing 1.5 ounces, and four baggies of suspected cocaine weighing six grams. Deputies also found an assortment of pills, over $20,000 in U.S. currency, and a 9mm semi-automatic pistol, the statement said.
According to Polk County inmate records, Shaw was charged with ten felonies: Possession Schedule IV Carisoprodol for Resale, Possession of Schedule IV Diazepam for Resale, Armed Dangerous Felonies, Possession of Schedule II Methamphetamine for Resale, Possession of Marijuana for Resale, Possession of Schedule II Cocaine for Resale, Possession of Schedule II Oxycodone for Resale, Possession of Schedule II Morphine for Resale, Possession of Schedule II Acetaminophen for Resale, and Possession of Schedule IV Alprazolam for Resale.
Shaw was also charged with two misdemeanors, Child Endangerment and Unlawful Drug Paraphernalia.
Shaw’s inmate record indicates he was booked into the Polk County Detention Center shortly after 6 p.m. December 14 and released 24 hours later under a $175,000 bond.
The statement from the sheriff’s office said child was not physically injured and a relative was contacted and took custody of the child.
