The Fannin County Sheriff’s Office is again participating in the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA)'s National Take Back Initiative.
Investigations Sergeant J.K. Davenport said expired, unwanted or unused medications can be dropped off upstairs at the sheriff’s office Saturday, October 24, between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Or, they can be left in the drop box in the detention center lobby at any time.
Davenport said no liquids or syringes (needles) should be dropped off or left in the box. There is no need to remove the labels from medications because everything collected will be destroyed by the DEA.
Davenport said citizens regularly leave old and unwanted medications in the drop box. The Take Back day offers an opportunity for citizens to also receive any information they might need or want.
“Getting rid of medications that are just lying around the house is important to keeping them away from children or out of the hands of those who would sell them or are addicted to them,” Davenport said.
There is always a danger of little children getting into things they shouldn’t, and medications are no different.
Prescription drugs, especially pain killers, are targets for anyone looking to sell them. Every single pill is valuable on the street.
Prescription drugs, especially those not being watched closely, are extremely tempting to those already addicted. They can also be tempting to young people who “just want to see what they’ll do,” Davenport said.
The sheriff’s office is located behind the Fannin County courthouse at 645 West First Street.
Those entering the main door will enter the detention center lobby, then go upstairs to the sheriff’s office.
