Bugs have six legs and spiders have eight. This was one of the facts about “Creepy Crawlers” that Kathy Church told over 100 folks who attended her presentation at the Fannin County Public Library last Thursday morning, July 7.
Church, from Smithgall Woods State Park near Helen, Georgia, brought several crawlers as she treated the crowd to education with entertainment.
Showing off her Madagascar Hissing Cockroach, she told how it could climb on glass, explaining the exoskeleton that is on the outside to protect its body. Exoskeletons are common to bugs, meaning their bones are on the outside.
Church also noted that the job of cockroaches is to clean up our mess. They go where they can find food.
Children also learned how a spider smells with its hands and “if a spider is moving, it’s breathing.”
Smithgall Woods is almost 6,000 acres of protected wilderness where the job is to “take care of plants and animals.” It offers 28 miles of trails for hiking and biking.
Church told the group, “when you can’t come to the park, I come to you.”
This was her second visit to the library this year, the first when she brought a popular snake exhibit.
