Copperhill seeking grant to unclog pipes

The City of Copperhill has applied for a $37,018 Governor’s Local Support Grant.

If approved, the funds will go toward improving wastewater backups along and between South Grand Street and Ferry Street.

“I have put this money towards the sewer system grant that we’ve applied for,” Mayor Kathy Stewart said during a special called meeting Wednesday, June 3. “This is for the downtown sewer system between O’Neal’s and the post office and behind JJ’s.”

Alderman agreed to authorize Stewart to enter any agreements necessary for the successful award of the grant.

Alderman Tara Akins was absent.

The local support grant was awarded to every city in the state and does not require repayment.

Each county will receive at least $500,000, and each municipality will receive a minimum of $30,000.

$37,018 is the maximum amount Copperhill may receive.

Funds may be used for infrastructure, I.T. upgrades, public safety projects and certain expenses related to COVID-19.

Funding will be dispersed July 1 to communities who have met all of the grant’s guidelines.

The State of Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development has already approved $245,000 in Appalachian Regional Commission funds for the city’s wastewater line improvements.

The City of Copperhill aldermen will meet again June 15 at 4:30 p.m. for a workshop.

A Beer Board meeting will commence at 5:15 p.m. the same day, and the regular June council meeting will begin at 5:30 p.m. following the Beer Board meeting.
