Caution tape doesn’t stop play: fix promised by March 1

Despite many who have ignored the caution tape around Blue Ridge’s downtown playground, it is still closed for construction, but it is anticipated to open by March 1, according to Councilman Mike Panter.

Panter informed that the company is waiting for the turf to come in, and then they can begin laying it down.

This will take five days of labor, and then the park will be open.

Shades for the playground will be ordered nearer to the synthetic grass installation.

Improvements to the playground have been nothing short of controversial, and talk of it first began in October with Panter claiming the area was not up to code.

Said improvements have involved removing the mulch from the area, constructing a drainage system, and laying down artificial grass.

Improvements have also been made at Blue Ridge City Park on Gray Street, which was filled with sand, but mulch has taken its place.

The improvements to the downtown park are costing the city over $60,000.
