Blue Ridge has sent local legislation to Georgia Speaker of the House David Ralston to change the city charter.

Two items are included: staggering the terms of city council members and giving the city council the power to appoint members when a seat becomes vacant. Giving city council members the right to fill vacancies on the council takes away the right of citizens to vote and choose their leaders. It’s not too late to change the bill. You can call David Ralston’s office in Atlanta at 404-656-5020 and tell him to remove the provisions giving the council the power to appoint when citizens should have the right to vote.

See this week’s issue of The News Observer for a full story and editorial addressing this problem. But this bill is already in committee, so call Speaker Ralston’s office now.
