Calder helps children enjoy reading at library

The Fannin County Public Library offers a unique chance for children to practice reading in “a low-stress environment.”

The Book Buddies with Calder Reading Dog Program is designed for children four and up and takes place the third Thursday of each month.

“Calder is a certified therapy dog who just won a National Collie Shining Star Award, so we’re very lucky to have him at the library,” Youth Services Specialist Hannah Loudermilk said.

Children can bring their own book or choose one from the library’s selection.

Spots are extremely limited with only two, 30 minute, one-on-one sessions offered the day of.

“This provides time for kids to meet Calder, become comfortable with him and have one-on-one time reading with him,” Loudermilk said.

That said, registration is required for anyone interested in attending. Registration can be completed by visiting the library or calling 706-632-5263.

“We do offer a standby list for cancellations,” Loudermilk added.

When Calder isn’t at the library, he can be found helping out the Gilmer County Public Safety as an Animal-Assisted Crisis Response Therapy Dog.

Loudermilk added that the library offers plenty of other events for children to enjoy throughout the year.

“We have some great events coming up, such as Santa visiting November 21, from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m., Grinchmas Saturday, December 7, from 11 a.m. to noon, and our Noon Years Eve Party on New Years Eve, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.” she said.

Visit www.mountainlibrary.com/events/, and be sure to mark the Event Location as Fannin County Public Library to learn more about their events.

The library is located within Fannin County Courthouse at 400 West Main Street, suite 104, in Blue Ridge.
