Board honors students

The Fannin County school board met Thursday, August 8, where they recognized several students who attend Fannin County High School (FCHS) for their contributions.

Fannin County School Superintendent Shannon Dillard started special recognitions by inviting Dr. Scott Ramsey to the podium to “brag on” two groups of FCHS students. She said, “It’s really gonna be a testament to this community and everything that they put into the kids...and how our kids are raised.”

Ramsey invited FCHS’s track team and coaches to the front where he said, “The work that it takes to get to this point...to accomplish the level to be recognized here in front of our board...there’s a lot of work that goes into it...time goes into it, and a lot of sacrifice goes into it.”

After Ramsey’s recognition, Track Coach Miranda Roof started by thanking Ramsey for allowing her and the team’s other coaches to be in charge of the team. She also noted a special thanks to the volunteer coaches who help the team for no pay. Continuing to her student recognition, Roof said, “We’re all proud of these kids, and we look forward to the upcoming season.”

Ramsey brought up the second group of students to be recognized saying, “We talk a lot about community and how great our community is...we have so many people that are willing to step up with anything that’s needed...but then we have these young ladies.” He added, “We recognize when people win competition, we recognize academics, but tonight, we’re gonna recognize just being good, old-fashioned people, because that’s what these young ladies are.” Ramsey said that the students have a “servant’s heart” and they “want to do for people.”

The second group of students included Jordan Golden, Ryleigh Loudermilk and Sydney Ford. Ramsey went on to explain that he didn’t want to go into specifics of who/why these ladies chose to help an unnamed person, but that they approached two of their teachers about helping people.

Over the span of a week, the FCHS students raised over $2000 through a bake sale in order to help those who were in need.

Ramsey said, “Once our high school students stepped up, the community jumped right in there and started helping.”

Additionally, the FCHS students hosted a bingo fundraiser event. Ramsey said, “When it was all said and done, these young ladies had raised over $15,000...when you think about just being good people, we got two great examples right here.” (Sydney Ford was unable to attend the recognition).

Dillard finished, “We are definitely blessed with our children every day...our children never cease to amaze you.”
