Blue Ridge pool will not be open

The Blue Ridge City Pool will not open for a 2020 season.

“It won’t be open because we did not hire somebody to do the repairs,” Mayor Donna Whitener said.

During a March 10, 2020 council meeting, Councilman Nathan Fitts proposed that the city team up with the county to create a pool that is “bigger and better” rather than spending city money to repair the existing structure.

He explained that he had been in touch with candidates running for positions on the Board of Commissioners, and the plan would be likely.

Councilwoman Rhonda Haight agreed with the thought, but no official decision was made that day.

“They (city council) didn’t vote to proceed with renovations,” City Clerk Kelsey Ledford said confirming whether or not they voted on the notion.

An estimate of around $50,000 was given to repair the existing pool, Fitts said in the March 10 meeting.

Quotes presented during a February 11 meeting, showed prices of over $90,000, and no action was taken on the subject then either.
