Basin schools full time; school zone strictly enforced

Copper Basin schools returned to a full-time schedule Tuesday, September 8, and the 30 miles per hour (mph) speed limit on Highway 68 in front of the school entrance is being heavily enforced.

A full-time schedule means that all Copper Basin students who are not learning online or through another method should attend school each day, otherwise, they will be counted absent.

Buses are also running daily.

An announcement from the Polk County School System said mask use is encouraged, but not required. Masks will be provided if requested. The importance of sanitation and social distancing is also being stressed.

Students had been on a rotating schedule for attendance.

As for the speed limit, Polk County Sheriff Steve Ross has encouraged drivers “to please acknowledge that the buses will be running, and for the safety of our kids, please slow down not just in the school zones, but at bus route times throughout the county. “It would be a lot better to be a few minutes late than to destroy a young person’s life.”

The 30 mph zone is enforced Monday through Friday in the mornings and afternoons when the school zone lights are flashing.

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office and the Tennessee Highway Patrol will be strictly enforcing the speed limit.
