Leader recognized for tireless efforts, sacrifices
Bill Stodghill relentlessly goes about his duties as commander of the North Georgia Honor Guard.
The volunteer position demands more than most people could imagine, but some have noticed and surprised Stodghill with their appreciation following the Veterans Day ceremony Saturday.
Both the Fannin County Board of Commissioners and the members of the honor guard presented Stodghill with plaques of appreciation.
Commissioners Chairman Jamie Hensley, Johnny Scearce and Glenn Patterson all expressed praise for Stodghill’s work, Patterson saying, “He shines a light” in the community.
Honor guard member Chris McKee presented the award from that group.
He singled out some of Stodghill’s hard work including coordinating some 50-plus funerals a year, teaching flag etiquette classes to all Fannin County fifth grade classes, and maintaining the guard’s rifles and ammunition.
“He’s (Stodghill) missed family affairs, birthdays and holidays,” McKee said.
“I do it because I love the community,” Stodghill said.
The commander also remembered his friend and mentor, Colonel George Pletcher. “Don’t forget his legacy,” Stodghill urged of the man credited as a driving force behind the honor guard and all the veterans service organizations in Fannin County.
Stodghill also praised School Superintendent Shannon Dillard and the Fannin County School System for all the efforts put into educating children and working with area veterans.
