The Fannin County Wrestling traveled to Union County Saturday, February 4 and secured the title of Area 8AA Traditional Champions
The Rebels team scored 190 points for the win over Banks’ 147, East Jackson’s 125 and Union’s 120.5.
Individual placements include: Cooper Moreland in second, Thomas Golden in second, Colby Shaw in second, Finn Thoreson in third, Landon Poole in third, and Drake Cantrell in third.
The Rebels individual Area Champions are Blake Summers, Taylor Collis, Carson Collis, Corbin Davenport, Christen Newberry, Matthew Crowder and Logan Long.
This victory for Summers secured his 100th varsity win as a junior for Fannin County.
For the girls’ divison, Chelsey Frye placed fourth in Girls Area 7 on Friday, February 3 at Alexander High School. This qualified Frye for the girls’ sectional tournament Friday, February 10 at Upson Lee High School as a two time state tournament qualifier.
Head Coach Chuck Patterson said, “This is the first year that the guys have won both the duals title and the traditional title. A massive accomplishment, it is extremely difficult to beat opponents more than once and these guys showed up and showed out. We had 7 individual Area Champions which is a program record! Another milestone was reached when Blake Summers claimed his 100th varsity win in the championship finals.”
He continued with, “It was a great day on the mat and hopefully we can continue the success next week at sectionals in Putnam County where if they place in the top six of the tournament they will qualify for the state traditional tournament in Macon February 17 and 18. Right now we are the healthiest we have ever been at this point in the year and I think that gives us a great mental edge heading into the final two weeks of the season!”
