David Nichols concentrated on more than football when he was introduced to the community Thursday, January 29, at Fannin County High School.
The new head coach repeated words including honor, tradition, community, faith, and working together as he talked about his vision for the Rebels football program.
Nichols began his self introduction telling the gathering in the FCHS cafeteria his goal is “continuing to win together,” which will be accomplished by honoring tradition and finding a way to “move it forward.” Kids and community, working together, are at the core of this goal.
Football should be looked at as a kindergarten through twelveth grade program. This includes making sure “that everybody at all levels is working together to create a good, seamless transition for our kids,” Nichols said.
“We win with our kids,” he said. This means getting as many playing football as possible.
This is accomplished with two principles, recruit and develop. Recruiting takes place in the school hallways and development takes place on and off the field. Looking at that development, Nichols believes, “Who you become is more than what you’ve accomplished.”
The Rebels will focus on the process to be a championship program, looking to “strengthen the whole community through football,” Nichols said.
Above all, he repeated, “We’re here for the kids.”
