Cheatham praises football team during end-of-the-year banquet

    Members of the 2021-22 Fannin County High School Rebels football team met for their end-of-the-year banquet Thursday evening, February 3.

    A basketball court at the Fannin County Recreation Department was filled with players, coaches, school system faculty and staff, and family members when they gathered to celebrate this past season, the team and those who helped along the way.

    “This group is special, and I can honestly say that, without a doubt, this team – this team got more out of their ability than any team that I’ve ever coached,” Head Coach Chad Cheatham said.

    “This is not a team, a team, with amazing speed, size and athletic ability, this is a team that was unselfish, that was sold out completely to one another, and they played with hearts like the great Secretariate. ... But, they played with hearts that were bigger than they even knew they had inside them.

    “That’s how they lived, and that’s how they played. Their belief in one another drove their behavior, and they too guys will go down in history as one of the greatest teams to ever step between the lines at Fannin County High School.”

    Cheatham made a point to recognize the 32 players on the team that have a grade point average of 3.5 or better. These players were given All Academic Team certificates.

    •Taylor Collis, junior, center and DL, 7AA Honorable Mention, all academic.

    Athletic trainers, Emily Turner, Haylee Newton, Lizbeth Acevedo and Dadrian Flowers, were recognized along with the film crew, Emma Pittman, Alex Kirk and Logan Martin.

    This past season, the Rebels went 6-0 in the region, naming them the First AA Region 7 champions.

    The Rebels went toe-to-toe with Fitzgerald in the Sweet Sixteen round of the Georgia High School Associations Playoffs. Ultimately, it was Fitzgerald who advanced to the next round.
