It was smooth sailing for the Fannin County High School flag football team at Gilmer County High School Oct. 10 as they defeated Dalton Academy 35-6 and defeated Gilmer County 28-0.
“My team showed up and showed out this week, earning big wins over both Gilmer and Dalton Academy. Our girls played with heart, determination and incredible teamwork. Everything we focused on in practice came together on the field, and I couldn’t have asked for a better effort,” said Head Coach Dawson King.
In the first game with Dalton Academy, Kendall Gaddis intercepted a Dalton opening drive pass and returned it 29 yards for a touchdown. She also scored the extra point. Fannin led 7-0.
Fannin would score again when AnnaLeigh Cheatham scored with five minutes to go in the first quarter on a six yard reception. She also scored the extra point to put Fannin up 14-0.
As Fannin’s defense led by Karli Sams and Adia Galloway kept Dalton shutdown with little offensive yardage, Gaddis connected with Makenzie Duvall for a 30-yard touchdown reception. Lexi Gravley scored the extra point to give Fannin the lead 21-0.
Fannin went up 28-0 when Lynnex Patterson caught a Gaddis pass for 17 yards. Cheatham ran the extra point in.
Fannin’s final score came in the fourth period when Gaddis threw a 61-yard touchdown pass to Patterson. Cheatham scored the extra point.
Fannin’s defense of Lola Temples, Miley Combs, Melissa Acevedo-Montoya, Galloway, Allie Potts and Lyla Strange created a strong wall for most of the fourth period. Dalton scored it’s only time late in the fourth period.
In game two with Gilmer, Fannin dominated Gilmer County. All 28 points were scored in the first half.
The first score came one minute into the contest when Patterson ran for a 37-yard touchdown. She also scored the extra point.
Fannin’s second score came at the two minute mark when Patterson ran for 17 yards into the end zone. Cheatham scored the extra point.
Fannin scored a third time just before the buzzer when Sams intercepted a Gilmer pass and ran it 19 yards for the score. Temples scored the extra point.
Gaddis connected with Temples for a 34-yard touchdown early in the second quarter to put Fannin up 28-0. That was all the Lady Rebels needed to secure the victory.
“There’s nothing our girls love more than beating Gilmer, and they did it with confidence, composure, and pride. I’m beyond proud of this team and the way they continue to grow and represent Fannin every single game,” said King.
