Whaleys lend hand to Habitat

Dr. Bill Whaley and his wife June made two considerable donations to Habitat for Humanity of Fannin & Gilmer Counties Monday, November 18.

Dr. Whaley met with Habitat’s Executive Director Chris Hall at Attorney Laura J. Ray’s office to donate a plot of land, assessed at $35,000, to the organization. After signing off on the deed, Dr. Whaley announced that he would also be contributing an extra $5,000.

Hall said the organization is grateful “to The Whaley’s for supporting Habitat’s mission of building homes, communities and hope in Fannin and Gilmer counties.”

He said Dr. Whaley hoped the land would be used to build a Habitat Home. Since the land is located in Fulton County, Georgia, they intend to partner with an Atlanta area habitat to provide a family there with an affordable home to live in.

As for the money, Hall said it will go straight into the housing and home renovation fund.

The Whaleys have been involved with Habitat for Humanity for many years now. Dr. Whaley said, “The second Habitat House, I believe built in Atlanta, went to a young family that my wife and I were supporting economically through our church.”

He added that the father of the three children worked low paying jobs due to dyslexia that went undiagnosed.

Whaley said, “Habitat was a savior for him and his family. Since I have had interest in Habitat for Humanity, and my wife and I contribute money to local projects that will make a difference in lives.”

Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit, Christian based housing organization that works in local communities around the world.

Hall said, “Through our various programs, folks can donate an array of gifts. Land, tools, building materials and cars. We have a Cars for Homes program. If someone has a clear title, and the vehicle is able to be moved, Habitat will come pick it up and donate the full scrap value to Fannin Gilmer Habitat for Humanity.”

All donations are tax deductible.
