Polk deputies make drug arrests in Copperhill

The capture of Graylon Jerome Newman is the latest in a string of drug-related arrests made in Copperhill by Polk County sheriff’s deputies.

Captain Keith Barker of the Polk County Sheriff’s Office said Deputy Nathan Henderson was patrolling on West Tennessee Avenue Wednesday, September 18, when he spotted Newman.

Henderson knew there was an outstanding warrant on Newman, 52, of a West Tennessee Avenue address,  and took him into custody.

A search of the suspect turned up several illegal drugs, Barker said.

Newman was arrested on the outstanding warrant for failure to appear on charges of possession of schedule II drugs, possession of drug paraphernalia and setting fire to property.

New charges against him included possession of Schedule II methamphetamine, sell and delivery of Schedule II drugs, sell and delivery of Schedule IV drugs, simple possession/casual exchange, and unlawful drug paraphernalia.

Newman remains in the Polk County Detention Center held without bond.

Barker said this is one of several officer generated arrests in Copperhill during recent weeks.

Only days before Newman’s capture, Sergeant Mike Mull arrested Brett Keith Humphrey, 35, of Blue Ridge, on charges of possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, and open container.

That arrest was made Friday, September 13, in the 200 block of Ocoee Street.

Deputy Casey Hockman conducted a traffic stop on Ocoee Street Thursday, August 22, that resulted in a felony amount of methamphetamine being discovered.

Barker said Hockman charged Carl William Dilbeck, 47, of Blue Ridge  with possession of methamphetamine for resale, possession of drug paraphernalia, use of a mobile device while driving, and expired registration.

Dilbeck is still being held in the Polk County Detention Center under a $50,000 bond.

Jeremy Brandon Helton, 41, who gave his address as homeless/Copperhill, remains in jail under a $50,000 bond. He also has a hold placed on him by Fannin County authorities.

Barker said Hockman arrested Helton August 12 on Ocoee Street.

Helton is charged with possession of methamphetamine for resale, possession of a weapon by a convicted felon, driving wile license expired, and registration violation.

Barker said all these charges resulted from deputies conducting regular patrols in Copperhill, not calls for help coming from residents.

Barker said deputies are “actively working in the city ... we’re doing all we can do with the manpower we have to work with.”
