Train: Board members “do it because they want to”
Fannin County Board of Education members are continuing a tradition of extensive training set by previous boards.
This year’s training began in January with a three-hour session focusing on the roles and responsibilities of board members. The Spring 2025 sessions will conclude April 10 with Cognia training that is designed to help them understand accreditation and the continuous improvement processes.
The most recent session was held last Tuesday, February 25, when board members spent the morning touring Fannin County’s three elementary schools. The afternoon was then spent visiting with school system directors individually to learn their duties and responsibilities.
Dr. Lucas Roof, chief academic officer, praised the board members for the time they spend taking the training.
Specifically, as to their school visits, he said, “They’re not going because they have to, they’re going because they want to.”
This marks the first time new board members Adam Born, Ashley H. Weeks and Robert Patterson have been through the training, although all three seemed at home during the stop at Blue Ridge Elementary School.
The visit kindled memories for Born who, while visiting the playground, took a trip down the slide and remembered how some steps leading down from the main building have “always” been there.
Several students in the cafeteria recognized Weeks and came to talk with her, and Patterson heard about school discipline as he toured the campus.
