Fannin numbers show COVID-19 cases slowing

Fannin County has seen an additional 20 cases of COVID-19 in the last week.

This brings the county’s total up to 2,012 positive cases since the pandemic began. As of Monday, March 15, fifty of those people who had contracted the virus have died, 11 probable deaths have been reported and 163 have been hospitalized. 

In comparison, last week the county had seen 1,992 positive cases total as of Monday, March 8. Fifty-one of those people who had contracted the virus had died, 11 probable deaths had been reported and 161 had been hospitalized. One person was removed from the death toll, which resulted in a decrease to 50.

Of the Fannin County School System’s 2,903 students, less than 10 have a current COVID-19 status, less than ten are quarantined due to exposure at school and 13 are quarantined due to non-school exposure. There are currently 359 students enrolled in online learning that do not attend in-person classes.

Of the 472 system employees, none have a current COVID-19 status and none are quarantined due to an exposure at school or a non-school exposure.

The Georgia Department of Public Health (DPH) reported that Georgia has seen 836,344 confirmed cases, 15,918 virus related deaths, 2,344 probable deaths, 57,383 hospitalizations and 9,360 ICU admissions. Of these, 866 confirmed cases, 47 deaths and 22 hospitalizations were reported March 15. 

In comparison, last week the state had seen 829,077confirmed cases and 15,640 virus related deaths.

Eligible Fannin County residents are able to make appointments for COVID-19 vaccination at the Fannin County Health Department through the North Georgia Health District at this time. Those interested in making an appointment should either call 1-888-881-1474.

Monday, March 15, vaccine eligibility was expanded to include adults aged 55 and older, individuals with disabilities and individuals aged 16 years and older with certain medical conditions that increase their risk of severe illness from COVID-19. Qualifying medical conditions include: Asthma, Cancer, Cerebrovascular Disease, Chronic Kidney Disease, COPD, Cystic Fibrosis, Diabetes, Hypertension, Heart Conditions, Immunocompromised State, Liver Disease, Neurologic Conditions, Overweight and Obesity, Pregnancy, Pulmonary Fibrosis, Sickle Cell Disease and Thalassemia.

The only vaccine approved for children aged 16 and older is currently the Pfizer vaccine, which is only offered at the Cherokee and Whitfield County vaccine clinics.

As of Monday, there had been 8,531 vaccinations administered in Fannin County, and 2,740,601 had been administered statewide. The county’s number included 5,314 of Dose 1 vaccinations and 3,217 of Dose 2.

Statewide, 1,256 providers were shipped vaccines and 3,500,135 total vaccines had been shipped. As of Monday, 78% of that amount had been administered. 

According to the Georgia Geospatial Information Office, the United States has seen 29,460,162 confirmed cases and 535,155 deaths.
