Literal tons of trash were collected from area waterways Saturday, September 27, during the Rivers Alive cleanup.
The cleanup took place in and along the Toccoa River at Tammen Park and Old Toccoa Farm, and Blue Ridge Lake at Morganton Point.
At Tammen Park, 57 volunteers rose to the occasion, collecting some 2,000 pounds of garbage.
Ten volunteers cleaned 5,000 feet along the river’s edge at Old Toccoa Farm, collecting around 900 pounds of trash.
The Lake Blue Ridge Civic Association went to Morganton Point and collected two large dumpsters packed with waste.
Rivers Alive Coordinator Sandy Reinauer said the lake clean up saw “14 discarded dock flotation sections, which weighed over six tons.”
Out of the river, volunteers pulled items including nicotine vapes, sandals, lawn chairs and tires.
“It was a good day,” Reinauer said.
The local Rivers Alive program is sponsored annually by the Blue Ridge Mountain chapter of Trout Unlimited and the Fannin County Chamber of Commerce and CVB.
