The Copper Basin Lady Cougars faced a challenge at home in its game with Sequoyah High School February 9 in the first of three games last week.
The first three quarters had multiple lead changes and a lot of free throws, but in the end, the Lady Cougars came out on top 85-75.
Basin shot 47 free throws and hit 29 of them (61 percent) while Sequoyah shot 27 of them and hit 18 (66 percent).
There were 12 lead changes with most of those coming in the first half. The half was a nail-biter. Both teams were aggressive early. Sequoyah scored first, then the Lady Cougars went on a 10-2 run with shots from Kloie Ballew, Alexis Hyatt and Cora Kimsey. With a pair of three-pointers, Sequoyah tied the game at 10 at 2:55. They quickly took the lead, but six lead changes later, Basin led 20-19 at the buzzer.
The lead changes continued in the second quarter. Basin kept the lead for most of the quarter with the help from an eight-point quarter from Kendra Deal. Basin led 41-37 at halftime.
Sequoyah came out of the locker room and steamrolled to a quick tie score at 41 at 6:42, then a 11-4 run to lead 52-45 at 2:55 to go. Basin chipped away and took the lead 56-54 at 58 seconds left in regulation with baskets from Alexis Hyatt and Addision Hyatt. After a Sequoyah tie, Kimsey nailed two free throws to make it 58-56 at the buzzer.
Basin took control of the game in the fourth quarter with a 27-19 run to seal the victory.
Kimsey finished the day with 29 points. She was 5-for-9 from the free throw line. Ballew had 27 points and was 9-for-11 from the line. Kendra Deal scored 13 points and was 9-for-12 from the line. Alexis Hyatt put up nine points and was 5-for-7 from the free throw line. Addison Hyatt finished with five points and was 1-for-3 from the line. Maleah Deal scored two points in the game.
In other action, the Lady Cougars traveled to play CLSA February 10 and came home winners 50-38.
CSLA jumped out to an early lead and outscored Basin 10-6 after one quarter. Kimsey and Kendra Deal provided offense.
Basin outscored CSLA 17-10 in the second quarter to led 23-20 at halfitme with six points from Ballew, five points from Alexis Hyatt, four from Kimsey and two from Riley Akens. One of Alexis Hyatt’s shots was from downtown.
Alexis hit another three in the third period. Kendra Deal hit one also. Basin squeaked by 12-11 to lead 35-31 at the buzzer.
Alexis went downtown again in the fourth,. Ballew shined with five points in the quarter. Basin won the fourth 14-7 to secure the win.
Alexis Hyatt led the way with 14 points. Ballew had 11 points while Kimsey had 13, Kendra Deal had 10 and Akens had two. From the free throw line, Basin was 10-for-14 (71 percent).
The Lady Cougars also played Sweetwater at home February 13 and won 59-52.
Sweetwater was strong all night, but so was Basin. Basin led 21-12 after one quarter and 38-25 at halftime, Sweetwater outscored Basin 14-11 in the third quarter and 13-10 in the fourth quarter, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Basin lead.
Ballew led the Lady Cougars with 16 points. Kimsey had 15 and Alexis Hyatt had 14. Kendra Deal had nine points and Riley Akens had one point.
