Lacey finds home in Jacksonville, Illinois

The tale of many dogs who’ve had to survive on the streets don’t end well. But one tale, Lacey’s tale, now has a happy ending.

This medium-sized, black and white Pit Bull mix and another dog were found by concerned citizens in McCaysville this past February and taken to Fannin County Animal Control.

Like most of the dogs who come into the county’s animal control facility, her background was uncertain. However, the numerous volunteers who had worked with Lacey during the eight months she stayed there didn’t experience any aggression and found her to be a sweet lady.

When Team Dahlonega, a rescue group specializing in hard to adopt dogs, began partnering with Animal Control they trusted what the volunteers said about Lacey and decided to take her.

Animal Control Officer JR Cornett said, Lacey was never a problem while in their care. The dog eventually ended up in Jacksonville, Illinois with a rescue group called PAWS (Protecting Animal Welfare Society) who networks with Team Dahlonega.

Lisa Jackson of PAWS said she and the others at her organization found Lacey to be “sweet, highly intelligent, good with other dogs and cats, and great with people big and small.” Jackson said, “We knew she was special.”

A family, consisting of a mother, father, teenage son and uncle went to PAWS to see another dog. Jackson said they had been searching for dog who could be a service dog for the young man. The family agreed to meet Lacey, too, and when she came into the room, she headed straight for the young man. Jackson said, “It was love at first sight.”

Of Lacey’s journey Jackson said, “We truly do not know her correct background because of so many stories but she was either abandoned or neglected and not cared for and got into trouble.

We gave her the benefit of the doubt and judged her on what we actually saw. We are all glad we did.” Lacey is now in training to be a service dog.
