James Vaughn

(1937 - 2018)

James Walter “Granny” Vaughn Sr., age 80, of Mineral Bluff, passed away Thursday, February 1, 2018, in Asheville, North Carolina. 

Born March 27, 1937, in Hart County, Georgia, he was the son of the late Georgia Calvin Vaughn and Thelma Moore Vaughn. He was a member of First Baptist Church of McCaysville/Copperhill. He served in the United States Marine Corps and the Army National Guard. Later, he retired after 44 years as an IBEW Local 613 electrician. He was a member of the McCay Lodge #423 F&AM. He was a member of the Yaarab Shrine Center in Atlanta, Georgia, (Alkuwa Unit). He was a devoted husband and father and an avid fisherman.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Martha Jane Pilgrim Vaughn; daughter and son-in-law, Beth and Rickey Warbington of Newborn, Georgia; son and daughter-in-law, James Walter Vaughn Jr., and Susie Vaughn Stewart of Morganton, Georgia; grandchildren, Daniel (Christina) Bentley, Will (Tiffany) Baker, Melissa (Jacob) Dixon and Tyler Vaughn; great-grandchildren, Dominic Bentley, Brianna Bentley, Hayden Dixon and Alaina Baker; and brother and sister-in-law, Lamar and Martha Vaughn of Murphy, North Carolina.

Memorial services will be conducted Friday, February 23, 2018, at 1p.m., from the Akins Funeral Home of Blue Ridge Chapel. The Rev. Matthew McDaniel will officiate. Masonic rites will be conducted by the McCay Lodge #423. Full military honors will be conducted by the North Georgia Honor Guard. 

Interment will be at a later date in Fairview Memorial Gardens in Stockbridge, Georgia. The family will visit with friends at the funeral home on Friday from noon until 1 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to McCay #423 Lodge, PO Box 183, McCaysville, GA 30555.
