Larry Bennett has resigned.

Chief quits

McCaysville Police Chief Larry J. Bennett Sr., turned in a letter of resignation less than a week after city officials voted to cut the size of the police department.

Martin McHan stands atop the sculpture he carved years ago as a donation to Blue Ridge for the downtown park. The carving was from an old oak tree that was turned into a memorial to his grandmother Vernice Davis McHan Sowers. After repairs are made to the sculpture, it will be placed back in the park.
Martin McHan inspects the damaged base of the black bear and cubs carving on Friday, March 11, in the downtown city park that he carved many years ago. City workers were removing the carving for park renovations when they discovered some termite and weather rot that made transferring the sculpture difficult.

Carving damaged

“Council member Rhonda Thomas saved the day Friday,” Martin McHan said after surveying the damage done to his carving of a bear and her cubs in the downtown Blue Ridge park.
