Thursday, August 7, 2008 3:00 PM CDT Polk County sheriff’s deputies took nearly an ounce of methamphetamine off the streets and arrested two individuals in Ducktown Aug. 2.

James Lee Payne, 25, of Copperhill, and Shanacy Hope Burnette, 31, of Morganton, are each charged with possession of methamphetamine for resale, possession of Xanax for resale, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Additionally, Burnette is charged with simple possession of marijuana.

According to Narcotics Detective Mike Monteith of the Polk County Sheriff’s Department, deputies Dwight Ingle and Glen Stiles were on routine patrol in the Ducktown area when they spotted Payne as a passenger in a vehicle.

Knowing that there were outstanding warrants on Payne for three counts of aggravated assault, three counts of reckless endangerment and vandalism over $500, the deputies stopped the car and placed Payne under arrest, Monteith said.

As they were taking Payne into custody, the deputies noticed digital scales and small plastic baggies in plain view in the car, Monteith said.

The deputies then searched the vehicle and found nine small plastic baggies containing approximately three grams of methamphetamine each and a bottle containing 119 Xanax pills, along with a marijuana cigarette, two sets of scales and other drug paraphernalia, Monteith said. Burnette was also taken into custody at that point, he said.

Over $1,000 in cash was also seized, Monteith said.
