Monday, July 21, 2008 4:23 PM CDT A Cherry Log couple is in custody following a Saturday night armed robbery at the Toccoa Riverside Restaurant on Aska Road in southern Fannin County.

According to Investigator Justin Turner of the Fannin County Sheriff’s Department, the robbery occurred July 19 just after 10 p.m. when two persons dressed in winter clothing and wearing masks burst into the restaurant, brandished a gun and demanded money.

In all, approximately $2,500 was taken in the robbery between the restaurant’s receipts and tip money from the waitresses, said Chief Investigator W.L. Panter. At press time Monday, the money had not yet been recovered.

Turner said witnesses at the scene identified the suspects as Nathaniel Robert Neal, 21, and Heather Neal, 19, both of Cherry Log. “They tried to disguise themselves, but as soon as they walked in the door some of the people recognized them,” said Panter.

No one was injured in the robbery, Panter said.

Turner said that following the robbery, a “be on the lookout” was issued for the Neals, along with a general description of their vehicle. He said the vehicle was located in the Springer Mountain/Doublehead Gap area of Gilmer County by Gilmer County sheriff’s deputies, and shortly thereafter the couple was found in the Doublehead Gap area of Fannin County by Fannin sheriff’s deputies.

Monday morning, both Nathaniel and Heather Neal remained in custody in the Fannin County Jail with charges pending. Panter said multiple counts of armed robbery were being filed against each.

Besides the Fannin and Gilmer sheriff’s departments, the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Georgia State Patrol, U.S. Forest Service and Dawson County Sheriff’s Department Canine Unit also participated in the investigation, which was still in progress Monday morning.
